WORDS TO BUILD ON

Uncommon Gifts

Most of us remember our best and worst gifts — the ones we’ve given and the ones we’ve  received.

They may be from decades ago, but the holidays are the perfect time to retell the stories. So we do. Over and over again!

If you listen carefully, you’ll discover that the worst gifts get worse every year. The stories grow by exaggeration. Even...

Replenished

Hot powerflow yoga makes me (Alyssa) a hot mess.

It’s between 92-95 degrees in the room when class begins. We smell good and look good. Then we start to move. And we keep moving for most of the next 60 minutes.

If you’ve never been in this kind of workout before, the steam, heat, and constant movement leaves you d r i p p i n g with sweat. It runs off your nose, down your...

Be Selective

The secret’s out: being good at what you do is a big part of why you’re so successful.

The easy (and often flattering) part of humming in your sweet spot comes with the external recognition of your gifts, abilities, and capacities. What you do is a gateway to opportunity... and then more opportunity.

It’s also one of the fastest (and most subtle) ways to living in the...

Engaging Expectations

If we could peak into your planner this holiday season, what would we see?

We love this time of year, so apart from work, our planners tell a story a lot like this:

Celebrations — the more the merrier!

Lights and more lights — deck ALL the halls!

Church and time with close family and friends — a must

Special foods. Definitely! Why don’t we cook...

Words Create Worlds

We love words! Yes, words.

We love to hear them from our motivational speakers and pastors. We love to read them in books. And we LOVE to speak them, especially around the table, in conversation with good friends and family.

Words are everywhere!

They’re on signs that tell you what to do when you’re driving. They’re spoken with a British accent, telling you what...

Tweezers, Ticks, and Trust

Recently, Alyssa noticed several tiny ticks around the eyes and lips of her outdoor cat, Rhemy. Tweezers in hand, she pulled him into her lap and went to work. Rhemy sat — still and calm — his face toward hers as she tweezed the ticks off, one by one, until they were all removed.

Tweezing ticks off any cat, especially around their eyes, isn’t an easy task. When you find out...

A New Cycle

Have you ever had a problem with an appliance you use all the time?

Right now, that’s Alyssa’s dishwasher. The door handle is broken and only one setting works: light wash. This was discovered this after running a full and heavy-wash load on extra-hot steam dry. It ran hot, without water. You can imagine the outcome. It wasn’t pretty!

If the issue had been recognized...

The Right Conditions

Hi, Ladies! Alyssa here with a peek into my yard... and into one of the most profound life-lessons I’ve learned while gardening.

Up close with growth.

My backyard is my haven. It’s my favorite place to retreat.

It’s green and lush in the spring, summer, and early fall. When the leaves turn, it’s like a postcard. And in the winter, heavy snow on the tall pines creates a...

Successful & Stuck

When we tell people about The Smart Carpenter...

We’re typically asked two questions: Are you carpenters? And when we say “no,” the next question is, What exactly do you do?

Though we tinker with basic home projects (and we do mean basic), our craftsmanship is of a different kind.

We work with women who are successful and stuck. We help them choose to move and...

Gumption & Grace

Hello and Welcome to The Smart Carpenter!

We’re Alyssa and Kisha. We are friends who became family, then business partners, but we were “faith buddies” first. We started our friendship by partnering together in prayer over our marriages, families, and future.

As we grew in faith and friendship, we discovered a common theme in our lives: we were “successful and...
